Mathematics

Overview

Mathematics is offered at KDC at all levels. In Years 7-10 it forms part of the core and all students do mathematics. In Years 11 and 12, mathematics is not compulsory but may be a prerequisite for some tertiary courses. Before students embark on their VCE the College provides extensive course counselling to ensure appropriate pathways.

Mathematics Foundations Classes at Year 7

All Year 7 students are entry tested and those identified as needing extra help are placed in a Mathematics Foundations classes. Students are then provided with intensive support in small sized classes in preparation for readmission to mainstream maths classes at Year 8.

Maths Homework Club

A Maths Teacher is available to help students with their homework every Thursday after school. Students can complete homework or get extra help by attending the Maths Homework Club.

SEAL

A Select Entry Accelerated Learning (SEAL) program is offered at the school. Students in this program finish Year 10 mathematics in Year 9 and take VCE mathematics at Year 10.

Maths Task Centre

All students in year 7 participate in the Task Centre. The Centre provides “hands on” problem solving activities improving logical thinking and developing problem solving strategies. The Task Centre is also in operation at Year 8.

Use of Technology

Technology is integrated into the mathematics curriculum. Students taking VCE mathematics are expected to be skilled in the use of sophisticated calculators. Currently the school is in transition to the full implementation of the TI Nspire CAS calculator. The school has purchased several class sets of these new calculators and they are being used by classes at all levels.

Basic Skills

At the same time students are often expected to work without calculators with several tests/assessment tasks being technology free at all levels.

VCE

Most Year 11 students take VCE mathematics and the full range of mathematics pathways is offered including; Specialist Maths, Mathematical Methods and Further Mathematics at year 12. VCE results in mathematics at KDC are excellent with students consistently exceeding expectations as predicted by the VCAA.
